The theme of this event was ‘Neighbours in the Digital Age’ with a focus on ‘The Impact of Data Centers in our Community’
The objective was to highlight current perceptions around DC’s and carry out a working session with the best industry minds available to identify and prioritise how DC’s impact communities. The collective insights from this session will support iMasons next publication ‘DC’s as a Good Neighbour’.
The feedback below highlights the multifaceted impact of Data Centers on the Economy, Education, Environment, and Community.
Economic Contributions: Data centers significantly boost the economy by creating jobs and supporting the supply chain, which leads to local GDP growth and feeds into national economic benefits, including digital exports.
Education and Skills Development: There is a strong emphasis on developing educational programs and skills for the younger generation to spark interest in the industry. This includes innovation in AI, job creation, upskilling, and training.
Environmental Impact: Efforts are focused on reducing the environmental footprint of data centers and promoting sustainable practices.
Social/Community Engagement: Integrating data centers into the community is crucial. This involves addressing local concerns about noise and disruption, considering the land use impact on locals, sharing upstream infrastructure (power, water, connectivity), and contributing to happier communities as evidenced by Gross National Happiness studies.
Access to Digital Services: Infrastructure upgrades driven by data centers promote local businesses and foster data-driven economies
Regional Lobbying: Forming ecosystem partnerships that speak with one voice to influence community policies is essential.
